The Covid 19 Pandemic seems to have taken over every aspect of our lives. It has drastically effected the physical, emotional, and spiritual health of our entire country along with the rest of the world. Some have lost loved ones, others are facing financial distress, and our entire country is at odds as to how to move forward. The Pandemic has helped me realize the importance of self care and my yoga practice.
When we do the physical practice of yoga, we are able to get out of our heads and connect with our true selves. Moving the energy in our body helps us to let go of our past and creates space for a new point of view. Some days I want a vigorous flow to build some heat and clear my mind. Other days, I want a slow restorative class for total relaxation.
Another yoga tool that I find invaluable is pranayama or breath work. There are several techniques that can be used, my favorite is called box breath. Box Breath involves a 4 count inhale, a 4 count hold, a 4 count exhale and a 4 count hold. The pause helps us to increase focus and reduce stress. https://www.healthline.com/health/box-breathing.
The final tool that I found helpful is meditation. For me personally, I prefer a guided visual mediation with relaxing sounds from nature:. Waves rolling in and out from the ocean, a slow moving stream, or the sound of rain really help me to relax. You can also use a mantra like “So Ham” (I am), or simply focus on your breath. There are several apps to help with mediation including Insight Timer, Headspace, & Calm.
